Big Ten football, Week 7: Ranking the 5 best teams

The 2015 college football season is about to start Week 7 and there have been quite a few surprises and entertaining games so far this season. A number of upsets have happened as well and there are likely to be quite a few more throughout the remainder of the season.

Looking at the Big Ten conference in particular, there are teams that have prove that they are among the best teams in the nation.

There are teams currently battling for the four college football playoff spots this season. It will be awhile before we are down to a reasonable amount to look at. At this point in time the Big Ten has a few teams that could very well make a push to make it into the playoff.

That being said, these teams are going to have to face each other at some point in time.

Let’s take a look at who the five best teams in the Big Ten are at this stage of the season.

5. No. 20 Northwestern Wildcats, 5-1 (1-1)

Ranking the No. 20 ranked team in the nation as the fifth best team in the Big Ten conference shows exactly how strong the conference has been so far this season.

Unfortunately for the Northwestern Wildcats, they are coming off of an embarrassing 31-0 shutout at the hands of Big Ten rival Michigan. They have some work to do to fix a couple of the issues that they have, but they are definitely a team to keep an eye on.

4. No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes, 6-0 (2-0)

The Iowa Hawkeyes are a bit of surprise on this list and have been shocking quite a few people in the media that didn’t give them the respect they wanted ahead of the season.

Iowa has a very strong defense and their offense has enough playmakers to get the job done. They are going to be a team to watch moving forward and have a big game this week against Northwestern to prove that they belong above the Wildcats.

3. No. 12 Michigan Wolverines, 5-1 (2-0)

Jim Harbaugh was hired to take the Michigan Wolverines back into title contention and he has made a huge step for the program in his first season with the team. He has preached fundamental football and the Wolverines are coming off of their third straight shutout game.

Michigan has to come away with a big win against the Michigan State Spartans this week to have any chance at making the college playoff field and they feel confident that they can do just that.

2. No. 7 Michigan State Spartans, 6-0 (2-0)

Connor Cook and the Michigan State Spartans have been perfect so far this season and have a big date on the road against the Wolverines this week.

It will be an entertaining game between two bitter in-state rivals and it will also give the Spartans a chance to prove once again that they belong in the playoff discussion.

They have a couple flaws to fix, but for the most part are a very solid team on both sides of the football.

1. No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes, 6-0 (2-0)

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes started the season as the No. 1 team in the nation and they are still there with a perfect record.

They have had some struggles throughout the season, but have found ways to get the wins in the books and remain at the top of the rankings.

Ohio State has one of the most talented rosters in the nation and it will take a perfectly played game for any team to knock them off throughout the rest of the season.
