The college football world was in a state of shock Monday night as long-time South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier announced that he would be retiring. The school made it official by saying the retirement would be effective immediately.
It comes as no surprise as who the school named the interim head coach for the rest of the season.
Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott has been working under Spurrier for six seasons and he has now taken over the reins for at least the next few months.
Elliott has served as an assistant coach or nearly two decades. He spent time as the offensive line coach at Appalachian State, his alma mater, before taking the job at South Carolina in 2010.
