The South Carolina Gamecocks started the season off 2-4 after their loss against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge this past Saturday.
It wasn’t the start that they were hoping for, but they still felt like they could turn their program around in the next couple of seasons. Steve Spurrier seemed in it for the long run, but everything changed when he abruptly decided to retire immediately yesterday.
Spurrier is one of the best head coaches in college football, but simply seems to have had enough of the game.
At 70 years old, there was no surprise that Spurrier was considering retirement at some point in the next few seasons. He simply wasn’t as energetic as he used to be and he likely couldn’t have helped South Carolina finish the rebuild they are still going through. Retiring was the right decision if he didn’t feel that he could give the Gamecocks what the team needed.
Following his decision to retire, the Gamecocks took to their Instagram account to release a touching tribute video to the legendary coach.
Check out the video for yourself and join us in saying goodbye to one of the best head coaches in the history of the game.
