Ronda Rousey’s mom blasts champion’s ‘terrible coach’

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has been successful throughout her entire athletic career. Recently, however, her head coach at Glendale Fighting Club, Edmond Tarverdyan, has received credit for the champion’s improved fans.

Despite the praise that Tarverdyan has received, Rousey’s mother, Dr. AnnMaria De Mars, doesn’t believe he has helped her at all throughout her career.

In fact, De Mars recently put her daughter’s coach on blast, calling him a “terrible coach” and “bad person.”

“I think Edmond is a terrible coach, and I will say it publicly,” De Mars said in an interview with LatiNation. “I think he’s a terrible coach. I think he hit the lottery when Ronda walked in there.

“She was winning before she ever met him. She probably won 99 percent of the judo matches she ever fought in. She’d won the Junior Worlds when she was 17. She got a bronze medal in the Olympics. She got a silver medal in the world championships. She was one of the top athletes in the world when she walked in there, and he wouldn’t even give her the time of day for months. Somebody like that is a terrible coach.

“I think she stays there because it’s like somebody pitches a no-hitter when they’re wearing red underwear, and they wear that red underwear for every day – and I think it’s superstition, and I would caution anybody from going there. And I think it’s bad he uses her to lure people in. And the reason I tell everybody, and I told Ronda, ‘I’m not going to be quiet about this anymore’ – he’s a bad person, and people should not go there. And if he wants to sue me, that’s my honest opinion.”

Ouch. Those are some harsh words from De Mars.

To be fair to Rousey’s mother, Tarverdyan has no other legitimate UFC fighter in his gym. Rousey has definitely build the brand that is Glendale Fighting Club and she has been used as a reason to draw other potential contenders to the gym.

It will be interesting to see how De Mars’ comments impact the champ’s career.

Could Rousey change gyms to be in a better environment and to continue challenging herself or will she continue to lead the way in her small, California gym?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Dr. De Mars is not a fan of Rousey’s current training.
