Finnish big man Lauri Markkanen commits to Arizona

6-foot-11 Finnish center and international NBA prospect Lauri Markkanen has committed to the Arizona Wildcats, per Evan Daniels of Scout.com.

Markkanen’s commitment could not be timed better, as Arizona will lose frontcourt staples Kaleb Tarczewski, Ryan Anderson and Mark Tollefson to graduation in the spring. He picked the Wildcats over North Carolina and Utah.

Coach Sean Miller should be ecstatic at this addition, as Markkanen is a big man who can score. Playing in the FIBA U18 European Championships in Greece over the summer, he led all players with 18.2 points per game.

He won’t suit up in Tuscon for another year, but could be an immediate impact player if he is given the opportunity to play significant minutes.

Arizona opens the season at home against the WCC’s Pacific Tigers on November 13.
