Big Ten football, Week 8: Ranking the 5 best teams

Heading into Week 8 of the 2015 college football season, who are the top five teams in the Big Ten football conference and how do they rank among each other?

At this point in the season, it is hard to see where the teams outside of the top two rank in the conference. There are quite a few teams that have played well, but there are only two that seem to have any kind of legitimate chance to get into the second college football playoff.

Looking ahead at the next couple of weeks, there will be some movement in these rankings. It has been a good season for the Big Ten, but it is still a tossup which team will take home the conference title.

Without further ado, let’s dive in and take a look at who the top five teams are in the conference.

5. Wisconsin Badgers, 5-2 (2-1)

While the Badgers haven’t played quite as good as many were expecting them to be, they are still very much worth of being in the top five rankings. Losing Melvin Gordon has been a huge loss for them, but they still have a talented defense to go along with a dominant defense. Joel Stave has done a good job of leading the offense and the Badgers should be on their way to a solid bowl game this season.

4. No. 15 Michigan Wolverines, 5-2 (2-1)

Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines are dealing with a depressing loss against their in-state rival Michigan State Spartans this past week on a last second score. It was a tough loss to swallow but they are still one of the top teams in the nation and are No. 4 in the conference. Seeing this good of a team ranked this low in the top five shows just how dominant Big Ten teams have been so far this year, but Michigan is back and on the rise once again.

3. No. 12 Iowa Hawkeyes, 7-0 (3-0)

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the Big Ten this season has been the Iowa Hawkeyes, who are coming off of a big win over Northwestern. They have been playing dominant defense and have an improving offense alongside of their above average defense. This team has a chance to make some major noise in the Big Ten down the stretch of the season and could very well run into Ohio State or Michigan State in the title game.

2. No. 7 Michigan State Spartans, 7-0 (3-0)

Connor Cook and the Michigan State Spartans barely survived this past week, but a win is a win. They are still undefeated and have looked very good for the majority of the season. Michigan State is going to have to knock off the Ohio State Buckeyes to have any chance at winning the Big Ten and making it into the college football playoff, but they are more than capable of doing just that.

1. No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes, 7-0 (3-0)

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes came into the 2015 season favored to win their second straight national title. They have looked inconsistent so far this season, but have weathered the storm and are still undefeated. Just like we mentioned with the Michigan State program, the Buckeyes have to come away with a big win over Michigan State to get into the Big Ten title game and punch a stamp to the college football playoff game with a win in the title game.
