LSU students grilled alligator prior to last weekend’s game against Florida, and are now facing some backlash on it. Per a Tumblr post by Andy Wells, multiple pictures of the gator feasts were posted on Twitter prior to the game and some random individuals responded “shame on you” as a result, among other reactions.
I’m sorry, but this is just plain ridiculous. Alligator meat is a delicacy down south, especially in Louisiana. Moreover, anyone who has ever watched Swamp People knows that there is a designated alligator hunting season that is strictly regulated by the state.
On top of that, so what if some gators were thrown on the grill? It was a way of celebrating the matchup and enjoying a special treat instead of the usual burgers and hot dogs. On top of that, how is it any different from roasting a whole hog? Or a chicken? Or even a turducken?
The long and short of it is this. Alligator is definitely not the most conventional of tailgating meats, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Anyone who lives down south will say they have tried it at least once, and that it’s readily available in certain areas.
Simply put, these LSU fans were put on blast for no reason and should not be shamed for how they tailgated last weekend.
