The Florida Gators needed a second kicker on the roster after Jorge Powell went down with a season-ending knee injury against LSU last weekend, and an open tryout this week got them their man.
Per a tweet from Mark Long of the Associated Press, dental student Neil MacInnes will serve as the backup to starter Austin Hardin for tomorrow’s game against Georgia.
MacInnes, who played soccer and ran track at Tampa’s Chamberlain High School while also spending two years as the football team’s starting kicker, has not played the game since 2011, but is excited about suiting up for the Gators.
It’s pretty much a dream come true,’’ MacInnes said. “I wanted to kick in high school and obviously being part of this organization, and Gator Nation, is kind of cool.”
MacInnes likely won’t get called upon to kick against the Bulldogs so long as Hardin doesn’t miss too many attempts, but it’s still a fine story. From dental student to college football player, this is an experience that MacInnes will cherish for the rest of his life even if he doesn’t play in any games.
Kickoff in Gainesville is slated for 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
