Punters can be a very important part of a team’s success. Teams don’t like to have to punt, but when they do, it’s nice to know you have a guy that can pin a team deep in their own territory to let their defense make a play.
One of the better punters in the nation right now is Syracuse’s Riley Dixon. He is a different kind of player as he not only averages 43.8 yards per punt, but he also has been involved in three successful fakes this season.
That has helped him get nominated for the Ray Guy Award this year.
According to Syracuse.com, Dixon is one of the 72 punters nominated for the award this year.
Dixon has punted 28 times this year and half of those have landed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. That is an impressive stat by itself.
Fans may also remember the fake field goal against LSU earlier this year where he hurdled a defender on his way to a first down.
Dixon also was named the Ray Guy player of the week earlier this year where he averaged over 50 yards a punt.
