The Iowa Hawkeyes are undefeated right now and have looked like one of the best teams in the Big Ten. They are ranked fifth in the College Football Playoff rankings and if they win out, they will without a doubt be playing for a national championship.
However, despite the team being 9-0, there are a lot of people that have been criticizing the Hawkeyes and their schedule this year. They have said that the team doesn’t really deserve to be undefeated or in the conversation for the CFP because of them not playing any of the “big three” (Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State) this year.
One big critic of the Hawkeyes is Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd. He went on a rant Wednesday, ripping the team’s non-conference schedule.
Now, the Hawkeyes can’t control their conference schedule, everyone knows that. If every one of their conference opponents ended up being very good this year, then maybe we wouldn’t judge them so much.
However, the team can judge the Hawkeyes’ non-conference schedule. I don’t see where the huge problem is with their scheduling.
North Texas is probably their only questionable opponent in the non-conference. Iowa State is a gimme because that is a rivalry game, which they played at the beginning of the year so NOBODY knew how their season could have gone.
I guess Cowherd forgets that Illinois State played for and nearly won the national championship in the FCS last year. Not to mention they are 7-2 right now.
Then you have Pittsburgh, who have had a pretty improbable season this year as well.
The Hawkeyes have one of the best rush defenses in the country and should be treated with a little more respect. I also believe that if this team goes to the Big Ten championship game and wins, no matter who they play, a lot of the people hating on the team will shut up very quickly.
I usually agree with Cowherd on a lot of things, but I do hope he is one of the ones shut up if the Hawkeyes finish the year 13-0 and are playing on New Year’s Eve.
