Entering the season, many believed that Trevor Knight would be the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. As a sophomore, he threw for 2,300 yards and fourteen touchdowns, while rushing for 339 and five touchdowns.
As a true freshman, he led the Sooners to a 45-31 upset win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, where he threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns. He had all the pieces to hold on to the reigns this season.
However, he lost the starting job to Baker Mayfield and hasn’t been given the opportunity to win it back since. Mayfield has done a terrific job for the Sooners this year, throwing for 3,082 yards and 31 touchdowns against just five interceptions, while having the Sooners at an 8-1 record and right in the middle of the College Football Playoff picture.
Despite losing his starting job to Mayfield, Knight has been very humble in the situation. He posted a picture of him, Mayfield, and third-string quarterback Cody Thomas on Instagram and talked about how proud he was of them on Sunday.
It’s likely that Knight won’t be starting for the Sooners anymore, unless Mayfield leaves for the NFL after this season or something drastic occurs. However, Knight knows that he must be humble throughout this and be thankful he has had the opportunity to play for one of the elite programs in all of college football.
