Kirk Herbstreit thinks Ezekiel Elliott can ‘absolutely’ still win Heisman

The race for the Heisman is crowded and Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott is a major underdog, but former Buckeyes quarterback Kirk Herbstreit thinks the junior can still win the coveted trophy.

Responding on Twitter to a user known as “5thFloorCards,” Herbstreit tweeted his support for Elliott.

@KirkHerbstreit Kirk, Do you feel Zeke can win Heisman if he has good games against Sparty, Michigan, & potentially against Iowa?

He's played well ALL year. But to make a run for the Heisman he'll need big games against these next 2-3 opponents https://t.co/JRxVUAzYF7

Herbstreit is absolutely right. Compared to running backs like LSU’s Leonard Fournette or Alabama’s Derrick Henry, Elliott is going to need some absolutely epic games to close out Ohio State’s regular season. Michigan State and Michigan are going to be tough enough, but what about Iowa in a potential Big Ten Championship Game matchup?

The good news is that Elliott has not blinked once in the face of tough competition this season. He has rushed for 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns on the year and has managed to break 100 yards in each of Ohio State’s games. He’ll need to go into overdrive to warrant any Heisman consideration, but don’t put it past Elliott to do just that.

Kickoff against Michigan State is slated for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
