Joe Paterno recruits take the field for last time; ends 49 year streak

Six Penn State Nittany Lions taking the field at Beaver Stadium Saturday share a distinction that no other player after them will be able to claim. They were signed by Joe Paterno.

Since 1966 Joe Pa’s signees have lined up for Penn State, a streak that will break as the six fifth-year seniors play their final home game.

Paterno’s son and Nittany Lions quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno honored the six in his column in the Centre Daily Times. Among the former Paterno recruits are All-American candidate Carl Nassib, the former walk-on defensive end who leads the NCAA in sacks.

Of course, it’s worth noting how the six got a very different experience than they expected, signing with a football legend and then finding themselves engulfed in the Sandusky scandal soon after.
