The FCS playoff field was announced today, and Jacksonville State received the No. 1 seed while four-time champion North Dakota State came in at No. 3.
Illinois State, last year’s runner-up, came in at No. 2.
Jacksonville State suffered just one loss on the season, against Auburn in Week 2. Even though the team lost that game, Auburn needed a late fourth quarter touchdown and then overtime to knockoff their in-state subdivisional rival. That said, the Gamecocks are definitely a team to watch.
But let’s not count out the Bison. North Dakota State is looking for its fifth FCS title in a row and second under coach Chris Klieman. This team has looked great each of the past five seasons, so to write them off would be foolish.
Needless to say, the tournament that always flies under the radar should be tons of fun to watch this year.
The rest of the tournament field is as follows: McNeese State (only undefeated team), James Madison, Portland State, Richmond, Charleston Southern, Fordham, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, New Hampshire, Colgate, Southern Utah, Sam Houston State, Montana, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Eastern Illinois, William & Mary, Duquesne, Dayton and Western Illinois.
