Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman is no longer in the running to be the head coach at South Carolina. According to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports, Herman has withdrawn his name from the race and will remain at Houston.
This isn’t really a surprise, as Houston responded to South Carolina’s interest by raising Herman’s salary to $3 million a year. Moreover, the former Ohio State offensive coordinator is 10-1 (6-1 AAC) in his first year with the Cougars, and the future is bright.
For him to leave after one season just seems odd, even if it were for an SEC job.
This means that South Carolina will have to pursue other candidates, namely Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart or perhaps Les Miles, depending on how Les Miles’ fate at LSU pans out.
