Late Tuesday night, it was reported that Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is set to become the next head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs. An official announcement could come as soon as Sunday.
With Smart now set to become Mark Richt’s successor in Athens, it is time to look towards building a new staff.
Much to the chagrin of Georgia fans, current defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is not expected to be retained despite working with Smart in Tuscaloosa. Instead, it appears that Pruitt could be heading back to Alabama to fill the void left by Smart’s departure.
So, who could become the new defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs?
According to reports, Smart is looking to reunite with his former Georgia teammate Will Muschamp, who currently holds the defensive coordinator position with the Auburn Tigers.
Of course, Muschamp is also a candidate for the South Carolina Gamecocks head coaching gig, so there is no guarantee that he would move laterally from South Carolina to Georgia. However, if he chooses to do so, Smart will be on the right path towards building a winning staff in Athens.
Should Smart keep or replace Pruitt? Sound off in the comments section below with your thoughts.
