Former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen lost his life in a tragic car accident nearly a year and a half ago, and his sister Abby posted a wonderful tribute to him on The Players’ Tribune.
The essay, called “The Big Kid,” she discusses her brother’s fatal accident and how he and the driver of the vehicle were both legally drunk at the time. She sends a serious message about alcohol and making good choices, but also celebrates her brother’s life with grace and humor.
Miss Lutzenkirchen discusses how everyone loved her brother, known to friends as “Lutzie,” and how he teased her when she opted to go to Alabama instead of Auburn. She discusses his love of Disney movies, from watching Aladdin to dressing as Woody from Toy Story one Halloween.
But it’s the last sentence of the piece that sums up her feelings on her brother.
It’s important to learn from how Philip died. But it’s equally important to learn from how he lived.
Rest in peace, Philip Lutzenkirchen. The world misses you. A lot.
