DII Stillman College dropping to NAIA, eliminating football program

When colleges are unsuccessful in certain sports, the ultimate decision that is sometimes made is to drop that sport from their athletic department all together.

It most recently happened in the FBS with UAB eliminating the program for this season, despite them reinstating it for next year.

According to Tuscaloosa News, Division II Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama will eliminate football from their athletic program after this year. The school will only field men’s and women’s basketball teams starting with the 2016-17 school year.

The decision was made after the school decided to drop out of the NCAA and into the NAIA. The school is expected to field other sports in the spring before they make the switch to the NAIA next school year.

The school will hold a press conference to announce the official changes later on in the day.
