NU holder responds to Minnesota holder’s proclamation

Punters have another job besides kicking the ball away, as these men are also drafted into fielding the snaps and holding the ball steady on field goal attempts. Minnesota punter Peter Mortell recently tweeted out a picture of himself holding the ball and declared himself “the Holder of the Year.”

As a result, Northwestern holder Christian Salem upped the stakes on Twitter.

"Your hands are too slow" they said.
"Your cadence has no rhythm" they said. This one's for the state of Minnesota.

Well, the gauntlet hath been thrown down, it seems. But seriously, let’s go to the numbers!

Northwestern’s kicker, Jack Mitchell, made 18 of 26 field goal attempts and 25 of 27 extra points.

Minnesota’s Ryan Santoso made 15 of 19 field goal tries and all of his extra points, so percentages seem to favor him. However, let’s not forget that Northwestern’s offense was more potent over the course of the season while Minnesota stumbled to a 5-7 finish.
