North Carolina starting safety Sam Smiley suffered a torn Achilles against N.C. State last weekend and is out for the remainder of the season. Andrew Carter of The News & Observer reported the unfortunate news on Twitter.

This is a devastating blow to the Tar Heels’ strong defense, as Smiley was a strong presence in the secondary. He had 48 tackles and an interception in 2015 and finishes his collegiate career with 126 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Just how this affects Smiley’s NFL aspirations remains to be seen, but Campus Sports will update this story as his recovery progresses.
UNC takes on Clemson in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
