Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will interview for the head coaching position at South Carolina within the next 24 hours, per a report from JC Shurburtt of 247 Sports.
On top of Muschamp, South Carolina has already interviewed interim coach Shawn Elliott and also has an appointment to meet with Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.
Muschamp, however, could be a particularly strong hire. He has head coaching experience, having spent four seasons with the Florida Gators, and possesses the defensive approach that the Gamecocks became known for under longtime coach Steve Spurrier, who resigned in October.
But it should also be noted that Muschamp’s time in Gainesville was not exactly a good one. He went 28-21 (17-15 SEC) as Urban Meyer’s successor and was never able to get the offense right, though that can be attributed to quarterback Jeff Driskel just not being a good fit at Florida.
The good news is that given how much South Carolina underachieved in 2015, Muschamp would likely start in Columbia with a clean slate and not immediately have to live up to the championship expectations left by Meyer at Florida.
