The D.J. Durkin era at Maryland has already scored a big hire as 247 Sports is reporting that Alabama assistant director of player personnel and Washington D.C. native Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has been hired as the Terps’ new defensive backs coach.
Though he was more of a recruiter at Alabama and not a coach, Abdul-Rahim’s reported hire came at the urging of multiple recruits in the area. He is the former head coach of Friendship Collegiate Academy in D.C. and turned that program into a local powerhouse under his watch.
Given how he knows the area and has a reputation as a strong recruiter, he could be the first to give the jumpstart that Maryland’s program so desperately needs.
One of his former players, Terps commit Adam McLean, posted the following to Twitter.
Congratulations to my former HS coach and Alabama assistant coach Rahim welcome home and great to have you as a terp POWER MOVE

Needless to say, given the state of Maryland’s secondary and Abdul-Rahim’s reputation in the area, this could certainly wind up being a tremendous step forward for the program.
