Auburn targeting FSU’s Charles Kelly to succeed Muschamp

Will Muschamp has resigned as Auburn’s defensive coordinator to become the next head coach at South Carolina, but Tigers coach Gus Malzahn already has his eye on Muschamp’s successor.

According to 247 Sports, Malzahn already has Florida State defensive coordinator Charles Kelly on his radar. Kelly has spent the past three seasons with the Seminoles, two as the defensive coordinator and one as the special teams and linebackers coach, the latter position being during the 2013 championship season in which Florida State beat, oddly enough, Auburn.

But here’s the kicker. Kelly played defensive back for Auburn back in the ’80s and was an assistant under coach Terry Bowden in 1993. He has ties to the program and can definitely help improve a defensive unit that ranked 85th in total defense in 2015.

On top of that, Kelly’s defense at FSU ranked 16th in FBS this year after ranking 77th in 2014. If that’s not improvement, then the word needs to be redefined.

The long and short of it is that when it comes to candidates, Malzahn could certainly do worse than Kelly and if he gets the job, the Tigers should look like an immediate SEC contender once the offense is sorted out.
