The 2015 Birmingham Bowl features two teams that had very surprising seasons this year. The Memphis Tigers had a very good year, starting off 8-0 and being ranked as high as 15 in the AP and College Football Playoff polls.
The Auburn Tigers were favored by many to not only win the SEC West, but to get to the CFP this year as well. The team finished the year 6-6 and just barely made it into a bowl game.
It has been an unusual season for both teams and there seems to be an even more unusual stat for their matchup in a few weeks. According to SI’s Stewart Mandel, if Memphis wins the game, they will have the same amount of SEC wins as Auburn.
Birmingham Bowl subplot: Memphis could finish with the same number of SEC wins as its opponent.

Memphis pulled off a huge upset during the 8-0 run as they beat the Ole Miss Rebels at home. Auburn has only defeated the Kentucky Wildcats, who aren’t making a bowl game, and the Texas A&M Aggies, who only finished just above them in the SEC West.
It has been a disappointing season for Auburn and it would be a pure embarrassment for them if this happens. The two Tiger teams take to Legion Field on December 30 at 12 noon EST on ESPN.
