Jordan Smith decommits from South Carolina

The rebuild of the South Carolina program for new head coach Will Muschamp may be a little tougher than expected, especially if what happened with one top recruit starts to become a trend.

Four-star defensive end Jordan Smith, who has been committed to the Gamecocks since July, announced via Twitter that he is no longer going to attend South Carolina. He stated the departures of Steve Spurrier and defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward as the biggest reasons for his decision.

He will now decide between fellow SEC schools Tennessee and Florida. You can read the tweets for yourself below.

After talking it over with my family and coaches, I have decided to de-commit from South Carolina. @GamecockFB

Losing Coach Spurrier was tough but losing Coach Ward is tougher. I have narrowed my decision to Tennessee and Florida

Is this a sign of things to come for the Gamecocks, or is it a one-off event? We’ll find out soon enough as the offseason ramps up for the program.
