Kirby Smart may be the new head coach at Georgia, but he will remain with Alabama as its defensive coordinator through the College Football Playoff. According to ESPN’s Alex Scarborough, Smart feels committed to the team and doesn’t want to abandon the players during crunch time.
There’s no doubt that Smart has had a big impact on Alabama’s defensive players. The Tide ranked third in total defense this year and turned stopping an opposing team’s running game into an art, holding LSU star running back Leonard Fournette to 31 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries back in the two teams’ matchup last month.
That said, though Smart has a lot to do in terms of getting himself set up at Georgia, namely recruiting and meeting with current players, not to mention assembling a coaching staff of his own, Alabama fans can look forward to him patrolling the sidelines with Nick Saban come their semifinal game against Michigan State.
