Video: Hockey ref slaps player, chaos ensues

In hockey, the referee has three tasks: watch the game, call penalties and keep everything from getting out of control.

In a game between Canada’s St. Mary’s College and Michigan’s Sault High School last season, one referee didn’t quite follow that code. There was a player scrum and the poor ref tried to break it up, except it looked like he hit a St. Mary’s player.

All hell then broke loose as St. Mary’s players rushed to protect their slighted brother, but then an even bigger fight broke out.

Even disgruntled parents got on the ice because, when push comes to shove, the ref did something inexcusable in striking a player in the helmet.

Needless to say, this ref didn’t win any new friends with his actions and given the ruckus that happened after his actions, he probably won’t be officiating games any time in the near future.
