France striker Karim Benzema has been suspended indefinitely by the French national team amid an ongoing sex tape scandal involving another teammate. The France Football Federation announced the suspension at a press conference Thursday.
Benzema was arrested in France Nov. 4 and was charged with conspiracy to blackmail and participating in a criminal group for allegedly withholding an “incriminating sex tape” involving France teammate Martin Valbuena. According to authorities, Benzema orchestrated a money in exchange for the tape transaction between Valbuena and an acquaintance.
Benzema had been left out of previous national team games since his arrest, but now will miss France’s two friendlies in March and could miss Euro 2016 this summer. The tournament will be held in France.
“If the situation doesn’t change then he won’t be selected,” France soccer federation president Le Graet said. “I leave a glimmer of hope if the case changes … My wish is that this case diminishes and that these two France players can shake hands.”
Throughout the process Benzema has said he is innocent.
