The Mountain West Conference could be looking to expand, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, and the two schools on its radar seem to be Texas-El Paso (UTEP) and Rice.
UTEP, currently in Conference USA, has been in talks with the MWC for the past three years. The school has no rivals close to it, the closest being Texas-San Antonio, 534 miles away, and would be better suited in the MWC as a former member of the WAC.
However, Dodd states that the Mountain West could favor Rice due to its academics, and even Wichita State has checked in about joining Mountain West basketball. Given how the conference only has 11 basketball teams and 12 football teams, expansion is definitely a good idea for both competitive and financial reasons, as any addition would bring in an extra $3.5 million plus the fact that the MWC’s TV deal expires in just a few years.
Still, nothing appears imminent as of now, but stay tuned to Campus Sports for any updates!
