In college athletics, and any sport for that matter, teams are like one big family. Players and coaches look out for one another in ways that can’t really be explained.

When one member of the family is suffering, the entire family suffers and looks to provide comfort; that’s exactly what is happening at Ohio State.

Before a recent trip to Connecticut to play the Huskies, associate coach Dave Dickerson’s sister passed away. To show support for Dickerson, the team wore patches with his sister’s initials — GH for Gloria Heyward — on it to honor the deceased. It was a touching moment that was put together at the very last second.

The gesture from the program shows that sports can be amazing, even in the face of personal tragedy.

  1. I hate the helmet stickers so many teams wear. It’s so peewee league & HS. I like the team concept, were everybodys equipment looks the same. Good teams like Alabama don’t need the head stamps to prove how good they are.
