Jay Williams recalls what Coach K told him after his career-ending motorcycle crash

Former Duke star Jay Williams suffered a near-fatal motorcycle crash back in 2003, barely one-year removed from being drafted no.2 overall behind Yao Ming.

A promising prospect, his career ended that day, and that was all he could think about in the hospital but when Coach Mike Krzyzewski showed up, he didn’t let him doubt himself.

Coach K handed Williams his mother’s rosary and told him, “you’re going to give this back to me when you play.” It had a deep impact on Williams, and Williams recalled the exchange in a video promoting his upcoming book, Life Is Not an Accident.

What Coach K said 2 me the day I almost died.. The 1st time.

Williams did make it back to basketball, albeit very briefly and never at the level he was at before. Nonetheless, he has paved a successful career for himself off the court, becoming one of the most recognizable college basketball commentators in the country.
