Notre Dame freshman wide receiver Jalen Guyton, who was headed for a likely redshirt after not appearing in any games this season, has been suspended from the team indefinitely “pending the resolution of a private university process,” according to ND Insider.
A former four-star recruit from the Dallas area, no word has been given on why Guyton has been suspended. However, the words “private university process” are never a good sign and could very well mean that Guyton’s complete dismissal is on the horizon.
That isn’t much skin off of Notre Dame’s back, as a source close to Guyton implied that he was considering transferring anyway and the Fighting Irish have plenty of talent returning to the team at receiver next year, both in returning players and incoming recruits. Even if star wideout Will Fuller departs for the NFL, the team is more than set.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that from a visual standpoint, Guyton’s suspension doesn’t look good for either the football program or the university itself. Notre Dame football is still smarting from a case of academic fraud in which a number of players were involved and though Guyton’s issue may be unrelated, the last thing this program needs right now is bad PR.
