Will Muschamp: ‘I’d still be at Florida if I’d hired Kurt Roper earlier’

Will Muschamp was named the new head football coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks and he is very happy to have Kurt Roper alongside of him as his offensive coordinator.

Muschamp thinks very highly of Roper and mentioned that he thinks he’d still be with the Florida Gators if he had hired Roper earlier.

“I feel like, if I’d hired Kurt in my first year at Florida, I’d probably still be there. That’s the confidence I have in him and moving forward,” Muschamp said. “I think he’s an outstanding football coach. He’s finishing the year out with the Cleveland Browns. That’s why we haven’t made a formal announcement yet. I’m real excited. He’s a really good football coach.”

If Muschamp is right about how good Roper really is, then the Gamecocks should have a lethal offense this coming season.

Perhaps the bigger issue for Muschamp in Florida was the lack of self control that he showed. Florida fans were always getting frustrated with the tirades that he would throw on the sidelines.

There is no question that he will recruit a lot of talent to the Gamecocks’ program. It will all come down to how he handles himself in the new position and how his staff and players will respond.
