New Mexico DB Markel Byrd killed in car crash

There is some very sad news to pass along in the college football world today. Early Wednesday morning, the official Twitter account of the New Mexico Lobos football team announced the sad news that defensive back Markel Byrd had passed away.

Byrd, only 20 years old, was killed in a car crash.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we have to announce that Tuesday afternoon we lost a member of our Lobo family.

Byrd was killed when he and his girlfriend, who were traveling home for the holiday, suffered a tire blowout. The two were then ejected from the vehicle and Byrd was killed instantly.

His girlfriend has been transported to the hospital where she is being treated for the injuries, though the severity is unknown.

We will have more details Wed. Thank you for your prayers. It's a tragically sad day. Love you Markel. #Lobo4Life
