Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari took to Twitter today to defend freshman center Skal Labissiere, who has been a Grade A bust since coming to Lexington as a five-star recruit out of Memphis. Calipari’s defense of his player comes just a day after the highly touted Haitian played just 10 minutes and had just two points and three rebounds against Louisville and was bashed by an NBA scout.
As a result, Calipari had the following to say.
One thing’s for sure, ladies and gentlemen. John Calipari is going to defend Labissiere to the death even if this isn’t the season where he breaks out. Despite being 6-foot-11, 225 pounds, Labissiere is averaging just 9.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and has been the exact opposite of the defensive anchor his predecessor Willie Cauley-Stein was.
The good news is that Kentucky is deep enough that it can win without Labissiere performing at top level, but he’ll need to up his production down the stretch once tournament season is upon us.
