Rule number one of journalism, folks. ALWAYS make sure you have your facts straight.
One reporter learned that the hard way at a Rose Bowl media session, asking Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz how his team rebounded from its season-opening loss. Just one problem. Iowa didn’t lose at all during the regular season, going 12-0 for the first time in program history.
Of course, the goof was caught on video.
OK, so the reporter confused Iowa with Rose Bowl opponent Stanford, who did suffer a terrible season-opening loss to Northwestern before going on a great run to finish 11-2 and win the Pac-12. It happens every once in a while.
But at a Rose Bowl media day, and in front of Iowa’s coach? There’s no excuse for not double and triple-checking facts in this circumstance.
Hopefully, the reporter lives it down someday.
Kickoff at the Rose Bowl is slated for 5 p.m. ET on Friday on ESPN.
