Buffalo Bills’ stadium renamed New Era Field

It’s a sad day for Buffalo Bills fans. Earlier this week, the Ralph Wilson Stadium sign was removed from in front of the team’s home. On Thursday, it was announced that the franchise sold naming rights to the stadium to New Era Caps, changing the name of the stadium to New Era Field.

Reports indicate the naming rights may have cost as much as $40 million.

The deal was first reported earlier in the week, but the team officially confirmed the news and released logos for the new field.

“We feel this agreement showcases two of the more recognized local brands not only for the benefit of our two franchises, but one that reflects well on our entire community,” Terry Pegula told The Associated Press in a statement.

While some Bills fans may be unhappy that Ralph Wilson’s name was removed, Wilson’s widow, Mary Wilson, was in support of the name change.

“I love Buffalo, and with all of the resurgence that it’s enjoying right now, it’s fitting that the new naming rights agreement is with New Era,” Wilson said. “Naturally, there’s an element of sadness for me personally, that I hope fans would understand. But I’m excited for the Bills’ organization and for New Era with their successes. It’s so great that a local company of this magnitude will be on this stadium.”

The Bills open the 2016-17 regular season on the road on Sunday, Sept. 11 against the Baltimore Ravens.
