Ever wonder what it’s like to be a referee on the field of a Division I football game? If so, weird! But you’ll also greatly enjoy this video from this weekends action that pitted the Wisconsin Badger against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Thanks to the Big Ten Network, we finally have the opportunity to get right in the mix.

I think the takeaway from watching this is just how hard a job referees actually have. There are so many bodies flying around at such high speeds, it’s difficult to make sense of what is going on.
Watching things from multiple angles as many times as we wish on television has maybe minimized the difficulty of their profession in the eyes and minds of spectators. I think most people would be content not be run over by one of these muscle-bound blurs, let alone spot the exact yard line their knee hit the ground.
Also supremely underrated is the overall fitness level of the referees. They are running around out there with college aged kids; engaging physically and mentally in a game being played by people half their age.
So next time a referee blows a call and costs your team precious field position, just remember they aren’t watching it from their sofa with Ruffles crumbs on their shirt.
