Happy Halloween, everyone.
The time is finally hear to throw our diets out of the window for yet another holiday. This time, we get to dress up as our favorite characters, celebrities or inanimate objects for a night before rewarding ourselves with enough candy to make your dentist weep.
But while everyone knows you get to dress up and stuff your face with candy on Oct. 31, what is the real reason for the holiday?
What Is Halloween?
Halloween is believed to have begun 1900 years ago in Europe as a Celtic celebration. Eventually, during the Roman Empire, a new custom began where people would eat and give away fruit on Halloween — if you try to do that today, you’re going to get an evil look. The tradition is believed to have come from the annual Feast of Pomona, which was a celebration of Roman goddess Pomona, which was held on Nov. 1.
When trick-or-treating first became a thing, children would go door-to-door with “soul cakes” before singing and praying to the dead.
It’s safe to say that we can all be happy that the traditions have evolved into what they are today.
