French figure skater Gabriella Papadakis was in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons following her ice dancing routine with partner Guillaume Cizeron at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. The malfunction left part of Papadakis’ left breast exposed.
The 22-year-old skater’s outfit came unfastened just seconds into the routine.
“It was my worst nightmare happening at the Olympics,” Papadakis said, via Sports Illustrated. “It happened in the first few seconds [of the routine]. I told myself I didn’t have a choice; I have to keep going.”
Cizeron also sounded off on the malfunction.
“It is just frustrating to miss a few points because of a costume issue,” Cizeron said. “It is not what we get ready for when we train. I am still proud that we managed to pull out a program like that even with a difficulty like this.”
Despite the mishap, the French team finished with a score of 81.93, which was second behind Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (83.67). American skaters Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished in third, while fellow Team USA skaters Maia and Alex Shibutani finished in fourth. The free dance portion of the event will take place on Tuesday at South Korea’s Gangneung Ice Arena.
Hopefully there will be no wardrobe malfunctions this time around.
The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea take place from Feb. 9 – Feb. 25.
