The 2018 Winter Olympics took place from February 4 through February 20 in PyeongChang, South Korea. Every time the Winter Games roll around, it presents an opportunity for new faces to break into the national spotlight as they excel in their respective events and disciplines. This year, there were a number of female athletes who broke onto the scene and made their case for stardom on the ice and slopes, whether it be snowboarding, figure skating, alpine skiing, bobsledding or cross-country.
Americans Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin were among the top athletes entering the games, with Estonia flag bearer Saskia Alusalu becoming an instant sensation after appearing on camera during the Opening Ceremony at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium.

Saskia Alusalu, 23, Estonia, Speed Skating
Alusalu became an internet sensation when she served as the flag bearer for Estonia during the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The 24-year-old speed skater became the first Estonian female speed skater to compete in a Winter Olympics event.
