Nick Saban is the head coach of the Alabama football team for the foreseeable future, but who could be in line to replace the successful coach when the Crimson Tide eventually move on? Many Alabama fans may not want to think about that right now, but SEC analyst Paul Finebaum chimed in on his thoughts about the future of the program.
During an appearance on WJOX’s The RoundTable Monday morning, Finebaum shared his thoughts on who could ultimately replace Saban and it happens to be another college football titan.
“Who knows when Saban’s day will come, but I’m putting a couple of chips down on the longshot now,” Finebaum said. “It’s no longer off the board. It was off the board, but I just saw it. I felt it. You know? His wife grew up in Alabama. His family is from Alabama. That will be a fascinating gravitational pull when Alabama calls and says ‘OK, Dabo. It’s time to come home.’ I don’t know if it would be as absolute [a no] as I thought it would have been a couple of months ago.
“But I will say this, before anyone says it’s impossible to replace Nick Saban, I think the only person who can replace Nick Saban is Dabo Swinney.”
It would make sense for the Crimson Tide to pursue Swinney, but he is currently in a great situation at Clemson and it would take an astronomical offer to bring him to Tuscaloosa. Alabama may just be willing to do that.
