Mercer grants leading scorer Ike Nwamu release

Following the 2014-15 college basketball season, the Mercer Bears’ leading scorer, Ike Nwamu, asked to be released from his scholarship. According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN.com, Mercer head coach Bob Hoffman has granted that release.

He has gotten his release, and he has had some schools that have shown interest,” Hoffman said, via the Macon Telegraph.

“He’s a fifth-year guy, and he’s graduating, and he’s exploring what’s out there. I want whatever is best for him and want it to work out for him.”

Last season, Nwamu averaged 15.1 points while adding 3.3 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-5 guard, who was a member of the Mercer team that knocked off Duke in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, will be eligible to play immediately for whatever school he chooses as a fifth-year player.

Along with the departure of Ike Nwamu, Mercer will also be losing Darious Moten and T.J. Hallice — meaning the Bears will be without their top three scorers from a season ago when they return to the court later this year.
