It looks like the Oklahoma City Thunder have zeroed in on Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan and the two sides have already begun working on the framework for a deal, according to Yahoo Sports.
Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti and Donovan met on Tuesday in Gainesville, Fla., and conversations – including contract talks – are continuing on Wednesday, sources said.
Donovan could command an annual salary in the $6 million range to leave Florida. He makes $4 million-plus annually with no state income tax at Florida.
Billy Donovan previously turned down offers to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves. He was also at one time the Orlando Magic head coach for a matter of hours.
This time around, however, things seem different.
The Oklahoma City Thunder opening is a great one with some of the top stars in the NBA on the roster, so Donovan seems poised to make the jump to the pros.
Of course, this is Billy Donovan we are talking about, so until he is sitting on the Thunder bench next season there is a chance he will have a change of heart and return to Gainesville.
