Whether you have all of your friends laughing or you’re the only one that awkwardly laughs at his own jokes, Emerson College will soon have a degree program that will help you perfect your craft. Looks like I may be changing my degree program pretty soon.
According to the Boston Globe, Emerson will offer an undergraduate degree in Comedic Arts starting the fall of 2016. The degree will not only help sitcom writers build a portfolio, it will also train students “how to write jokes for both the stage and the screen to help find their voices as comedians.”
Beginning in September 2016, undergraduates looking to brush up on their on-screen performance skills or comedy-writing abilities will be able to work toward a bachelor of fine arts degree in the “Comedic Arts.”
“This is going to be a hands-on program,” said Martie Cook, Emerson’s associate chairwoman of visual and media arts department. “If you want to be a sitcom writer, we are going to take you through sitcom writing, and you will walk out of here with several scripts in your hand that you can then show to agents and producers, so you actually have a portfolio.”
If you think that this college has no experience in comedy, think again. Emerson has some notable funny-men alumni like Jay Leno, Bill Burr, Harris Wittels, and Denis Leary.
If you think you’re funny enough (or not depending on your skills), then this degree may be the thing for you. So chug on up to the Northeast and enroll for classes next September and get ready to wow your friends.
That is, if you have them. I hear comedians tend to keep to themselves.
