Jameis Winston sets jersey sales record for Buccaneers

Jameis Winston was one of the most polarizing and controversial athletes during his time at Florida State. From his wondrous play on the football field that led to him becoming just the second freshman to win the Heisman to his unappealing run-ins with the law for stealing crab legs and alleged sexual assault, Winston has certainly garnered all kinds of attention.

Now, the number one overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has achieved a new height: setting the jersey sales record for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to Bucs Blitz, the former Seminole quarterback has sold a ton of jerseys since being drafted in May. The number of jerseys he had to sell or the person he beat out to grab the record has yet to be released, but that will probably be available to the public in the coming weeks.

Michael Davidson of the Herald Tribune first reported the news via Twitter.

It is not a surprise that Winston has set this record. Since he was drafted, he has sold jerseys like crazy. He is only behind Marcus Mariota, the second overall pick by the Tennessee Titans, for the rookie jersey sales lead.

The Florida State campus is located in Tallahassee, just hours from Tampa Bay. So, most of these jersey sales have probably come from fans who followed Winston from college to the NFL, much like Blake Bortles who, last year, was drafted out of Central Florida in Orlando to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Whether you love him or loathe him, Winston has certainly captured the hearts, and wallets, or football fans all over the panhandle of Florida. I guess the ugly alarm-clock number design doesn’t detract fans from buying their favorite player’s jersey, even if it IS Tampa Bay.
