So many interesting storylines surround tonight’s WWE Battleground special event. The Viper and The Celtic Warrior’s rivalry culminates in an ultimate clash tonight. The rubber match of the biggest veteran vs rookie rivalry of 2015 ends in a United States Championship match. Then you have Brock Lesnar, who will be in his first match since Wrestlemania 31, where current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase and essentially stole the title from Lesnar.
It is going to be an interesting night and when the dust settles, we could be seeing the return of a legend.
Battleground Kickoff Show: King Barrett vs R-Truth
This rivalry started back in the buildup to Wrestlemania 31. King Barrett, then Bad News Barrett and Intercontinental Champion, was defending the title in a seven-man ladder match that included Truth. In the weeks leading up to the biggest show of the year, Truth tried to get into the champion’s head by stealing the title and holding it hostage. For weeks the title bounced around from competitor to competitor before finally ending back in the hands of Barrett the Monday night before Wrestlemania. Barrett lost the title at Wrestlemania and in April, WWE brought back the King of the Ring tournament.
Barrett won the tournament and that led to Truth trying to reignite the rivalry. Truth got into the King’s head by stealing his cape and crown and dancing around with it during a match on Smackdown. Truth and Barrett had a match on the Money in the Bank kickoff show in June and Truth pulled off the upset. This led to Truth wearing a towel as a cape, a Burger King crown, and a plunger as a scepter. He called himself King What’s Up. The two have exchanged wins and losses and this really feels like a match that WWE put together to fill some time.
The winner of this match “wins the crown” and will be the true king. Barrett’s momentum has all but been killed the last few months. Let’s hope a win tonight sparks a fire in the King and he gets the push everybody wanted in April.
Prediction: King Barrett
WWE Tag Team Championship: Prime Time Players (c) vs The New Day
Despite chants of “New…Day Sucks” every time Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E come down to the ring, they have kept the “Power of Positivity” and that has worked into a rematch for the WWE Tag Team Championship. The Prime Time Players won the titles for the first time at Money in the Bank in June, but some people believe that there is no way the get out of Battleground as champions. That is because in June, they only faced Woods and Big E while Kingston was participating in the Money in the Bank ladder match. This time, The New Day has numbers and that could spell disaster for the champions.
While the match isn’t a 3-on-2 handicap match, The New Day still has the advantage of having an extra guy at ringside. This has worked in their favor in the past and all signs point to The New Day walking out of St. Louis as the champions once again. If the Prime Time Players drop the titles tonight, that sets up a tag match at Summerslam that this company could really benefit from.
Prediction: The New Day
Sheamus vs Randy Orton
Since Sheamus won the Money in the Bank briefcase back in June, he has looked like a pretty weak future world champion. He has only been on the winning side of two televised matches since the event and he has been thrust into the middle of a rivalry with Randy Orton. That could be the best thing for The Celtic Warrior. If Sheamus is to pull off the win over Orton, it would do wonders for him and the Money in the Bank briefcase.
But, WWE loves Randy Orton and seeing as the event is in his hometown of St. Louis tonight, there is reason to believe that he would get the win tonight just to make the fans happy. This would bring Sheamus to an all-time low level, but that would also set up a huge rematch at Summerslam next month. No one knows when Sheamus will cash in the briefcase, but holding onto it and getting some big wins over the next few months will definitely make everyone believe he will be a great champion.
Prediction: Randy Orton
WWE United States Championship: John Cena (c) vs Kevin Owens
This is the rubber match between Cena and Owens. This is also the first time Cena’s United States Championship is on the line. Owens lost the NXT Championship to Finn Balor at WWE’s special live event from Tokyo, Japan on July 4. From the second Balor got the pin, people immediately became experts and said that Owens is going to win the United States Title from Cena…and I think they’re right.
Owens has way too much momentum going into this match. Since losing the title, he hasn’t said a word over the mic on Raw or Smackdown. He also hasn’t had a match since July 4. He has ruined every one of Cena’s United States Championship Open Challenge. It wouldn’t make sense for Cena to go over in this match. I understand if they want a final match at Summerslam, but it would make more sense for Cena to come for revenge on Owens in August. It would also make sense to make fans happy by giving them what they have wanted for months.
Prediction: Kevin Owens
Roman Reigns vs Bray Wyatt
This is going to be a classic WWE fight. Roman Reigns was inches away from winning the Money in the Bank briefcase in June before the lights went out and Bray Wyatt appeared to cost Reigns the match. The sick and twisted Wyatt went into a crazed state where he was obsessed with Reigns saying that he shouldn’t have been the one chosen. “Anyone but you” became Wyatt’s battle cry against Reigns as he tried to get in the head of Reigns. He even used Reigns’s family, mainly his daughter, to antagonize him.
It worked. This past Monday, Reigns got his hands of Wyatt and he got the best of him. Wyatt awoke a beast inside Reigns that fans haven’t seen since his days with The Shield. Reigns will attempt to destroy Wyatt’s being and he will move on to trying to achieve his ultimate goal of being world champion
Prediction: Roman Reigns
WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) vs Brock Lesnar
Seth Rollins is alone. Truly alone. In the match against Dean Ambrose back in June, he had to go it alone, but he had the luxury of knowing J&J Security or Director of Operations Kane could come down and help him. Brock Lesnar has systematically destroyed The Authority singlehandedly over the last few weeks and now Rollins has not one to help him. If the champion wanted to prove himself to everyone, going out and beating Lesnar would be the best way to do it.
Everyone is against Rollins. No one believes he can hold onto his title and that has motivated Rollins more than ever before. He has vowed to “go to Suplex City and burn it to the ground” tonight. I think he is capable of doing so, but I don’t think he will do it alone. There have been rumors swirling this week of The Undertaker returning at either tonight’s event or tomorrow night on Raw. What could he want? Does he want a rematch against Lesnar? Does he want to avenge his “brother” Kane? No one really knows, but I think the match ends with him getting involved in some way.
Rollins sneaks off with the title and gets himself into a match at Summerslam that fans have wanted to see for almost a year. Rollins vs WWE COO Triple H.
Prediction: Seth Rollins
You can catch the action tonight with the kickoff show live on the WWE Network at 7 pm and the event kicking off at 8 pm on the Network and pay-per-view.
