North Dakota cuts nickname list down to five

It has been an ongoing process for a few months now, but North Dakota seems very close to picking a nickname for their athletic programs. Since 2012, the school has had no nickname and were going as just “North Dakota” after the NCAA ordered them to drop Fighting Sioux as it was said to be offensive to Native Americans.

According to College Basketball Talk, North Dakota has cut the original list of more than 1,100 possibilities down to just five. With the release of the final five, the school confirms that they will have an actual nickname instead of just going by “North Dakota” or “UND” which was a big possibility in June.

The school’s new nickname will be voted on by the public. Fans have some pretty great nicknames to choose from. My personal favorite, Roughriders is still in the running. Fighting Hawks, Sundogs, North Stars, and Nodaks all join my favorite on the list of final nicknames.

This has turned out to be one of the more interesting stories in mid-major college basketball this summer. I am sure the school is ready for a new name and a new beginning.
