Orioles celebrate Cal Ripken with Fielder’s Choice brew

All the brouhaha surrounding the Baltimore Orioles and why they’re personalizing a beer for long-time Orioles standout and two-time MVP, Cal Ripken Jr., is quite non-scientific.

A Baltimore-based brewing company, Heavy Seas will honor No. 8 with a 5 percent ABV beer referred to as Fielder’s Choice to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ripken surpassing Lou Gehrig in consecutive games played.

The specialized beer will hit local Baltimore stores, Camden Yards and Ripken Stadium next week in Cal Ripken-themed packages, but only 4,000 cases are expected to get through production.

After continuous talks between the brewery and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, $2 from each of the 4,000 cases will be donated to the foundation, whose mission statement spans helping at-risk youth in the local community.

Avoiding any licensing obstacles, Heavy Seas and their designer responsible for the artwork on the packages tweaked the product to include no MLB insignia, but received the good graces of Cal Ripken Jr. and the Maryland Stadium Authority for infusing their images onto the cases.

The Fielder’s Choice lager will feature the hops of the Czech Saaz and the infamous German Hallertau, which will provide beer enthusiasts with a soft dynamic followed by memories of biscuit and fresh-baked bread.
