It is always a fun thing to see a college football team makes an authority figure feel like “one of the guys”. That is what the Miami Hurricanes did with assistant athletic director Tom Symond during a punt-catching competition at the team’s training camp on Monday.
Fielding punts is hard enough for an athlete to do. You see returners drop the punts all the time and then get chewed out or lose their job because of it. Maybe Symond actually has a future fielding punts when he showed off his skills in a video shared by College Spun.
While Symond’s technique isn’t the prettiest in the world, all that matters is that he caught the ball. The players made him feel pretty good about it and acted like he had just kicked the winning field goal in the national championship game.
Now that I think about it, the players react like his for an assistant AD about as much as they do for a kicker. Symond is kind of on the same level then.
Good job, Tom.
